EIIS in Ireland: Up to 50% Tax Relief. What's the Catch?

October 26, 2026

Paddy Delaney

What is the maximum you can invest under EIIS each year?

For investments made from 2025, EIIS relief is available on up to €1,000,000 a year, across the Part 16 reliefs. Some older guidance still shows the previous limits of €250,000 or €500,000, so check the date of what you are reading.

Is EIIS in Ireland a useful investment or not? The Employment Investment Incentive Scheme offers higher-rate taxpayers up to 50% income tax relief for investing in Irish SMEs, and every autumn an awful lot of people are offered it. Paddy Delaney puts the investor's questions to Stephen Tully of BVP.

What you will learn:

• How the EIIS relief tiers work, and why higher relief means higher risk

• How long your money is really tied up, and who EIIS is not suitable for

• Where your money is held, what it costs, and who is paid commission for recommending it

• How gains are taxed, and when the tax relief can be withdrawn

If you are weighing up EIIS before the year end, this episode gives you the questions to ask first.

Do you pay capital gains tax on EIIS gains in Ireland?

Yes. Gains on EIIS shares are subject to capital gains tax, and the income tax relief is not deducted from your cost when the gain is calculated. For losses the relief is taken into account, which usually means no loss relief is available.
